Grinding can compete with cutting in many fields, either technically or economically. Some fields are even the only processing method. However, many people in the manufacturing industry believe that grinding is inefficient and uneconomical, so they try not to use it. Salmon believes that the main reason for this idea is the lack of understanding of the grinding principle and its inherent potential. The purpose of writing this paper is to help the relevant people in the business community correctly understand and apply grinding technology.

Nowadays, the manufacturing industry is eagerly looking for alternative grinding solutions. Some "new" programs being tested to improve the production efficiency of parts include hard cutting, dry cutting, wear-resistant coating tools and high-speed cutting. However, it should be pointed out that the word "high speed" is not strange to grinding. The normal running surface linear speed of the grinding wheel can reach 1829m/min, and the practical production speed of the high-speed super hard abrasive wheel can reach 4572~10668m/min, while the speed on the special grinding equipment in the laboratory can reach 18288m/min - only slightly lower than the sound speed.

 

Part of the reason why industry doesn't like grinding is that they don't understand it. Superhard abrasive and creep feed grinding processes can compete with milling, broaching, planing and, in some cases, turning from a technical or economic point of view. However, there are many people in manufacturing enterprises whose knowledge is still at the level of traditional processing technology, and they often take a repulsive attitude towards grinding. However, with the development of new materials (such as ceramics, whisker reinforced metals and reinforced polymer materials, multilayer metal and non-metallic pressing materials), grinding is often the only feasible processing method.

If proper binders are used, the abrasive grains can be controlled in the process of falling off and self-sharpening. In addition, when the grinding wheel becomes blunt or there is a powdery load, it can be trimmed on the machine tool. These advantages are difficult to achieve in other processing methods. The grinding wheel can make the tolerance of the machined surface reach the order of tens of thousands (micrometer), and also can make the surface finish and cutting texture reach the best state.

Unfortunately, grinding has long been regarded as an "art". Until the last 40 to 50 years, researchers have continuously studied the grinding process and developed new and improved abrasives, binder systems and various grinding fluids. With the achievement of these achievements, grinding has entered the kingdom of science.
